Wedding planning could be kind of funny, right? You put so much energy into one day and have to make a hundred+ micro-decisions, not to mention some pretty big ones. The venue, the dress, the menu, the music, the overall vibe—it’s all in the details.
Some decisions were easier than others for us (hello signature cocktails!), but when it came to my wedding fragrance, I only decided a few weeks before the wedding, after months and months of consideration.
I haven’t had a signature scent since I wore Santa Maria Novella’s single-note Mughetto (Lily of the Valley) most of college, so I didn’t have an obvious go-to. Fragrance has always been important to me, thanks to my mom’s love for it, and I knew that this would be a big decision—as the scent I’m wearing for our wedding will always take my memory right back to the day and I’ll be instantly wrapped up in the love and joy we felt.
I wore Diptyque’s L’Ombre dans l’Eau nonstop in the summer of 2016, it reminds me of a trip my husband and I took to Iceland—everyone’s favorite destination that year. We rented a car and as we traveled further east across the southern coast, it was hours before we saw any signs of life—save for a few passing cars. No towns, schools or restaurants, just mile after mile of gorgeous, otherworldly scenery. Rolling hills of moss-laden lava fields, glaciers in the distance. We felt very separate from our life back in Brooklyn—completely detached and unhinged, and frankly, it gave me a fair amount of anxiety. Maybe it’s just me, but I like knowing there’s a hospital nearby in case something happens. However, no matter how far from civilization we were, there was Ben, by my side—my calm and cool partner, facing adventure head on.
I chose this fragrance again to wear when I married my husband as a reminder of that lesson—that home and love and my sense of belonging in this world is wherever he is.
In addition to wearing the fragrance throughout our wedding weekend, I also scented the inn in which we got married with the coordinating candle to the fragrance, Diptyque Baies. Whenever I smell either of these, it brings me right back to the day.
